In any situation in which despair threatens to pull us under, it is imperative to remember to draw upon whatever tools we have at hand. Whether personal, relational, or global, we all have times when, in the words of the inimitable Sandra Boynton, “the turkeys get us down”. Sometimes they get us way, way, way down.

In 1940, Major Wellesley Tudor Poole (Order of the British Empire) instituted the “Silent Minute” to unite people in meditation and prayer (according to each individual’s beliefs) to hold a vision for peace to prevail. This Silent Minute was supported by King George VI, Sir Winston Churchill, and even US President Franklin D. Roosevelt and observed every evening at 9 pm. As Poole said ““There is no power on earth that can withstand the united cooperation on spiritual levels of men and women of goodwill everywhere. It is for this reason that the continued and widespread observance of the Silent Minute is of such vital importance in the interest of human welfare.”

I began these meditations in 2017. 9 years later we are in even more dire circumstances. Given current events, I have felt inspired to bring these weekly communal vision and prayer sessions back. I have felt hope through the idea of the Silent Minute and have felt called to offer a similar (though different) approach. Whether you are focused on events and situations personal, political, environmental, or global, you are welcome to join the circle and add your energy to a Vision of Hope.
